The National Monuments Service's description
Discovered in 1978 during removal of a field boundary, on a gentle E facing slope overlooking Brandon Bay, this souterrain was inspected by Reynolds (OPW) and later covered in again. The remains consisted of a short stretch of passage c. 3m long NNW-SSE and c. 1m wide; its S end was completely blocked by earth while its N end had been disturbed prior to inspection. The drystone walls, tapering in slightly towards the top, were capped by 3 flat slabs at a maximum of 1m above the floor which was flooded to a depth of .5m. According to the landowner, the souterrain was uncovered beneath or in the immediate vicinity of an irregularly-shaped stone enclosure named 'Sheepfold' on the 2nd edition of the OS map; this was removed in conjunction with the field boundary into which it was incorporated.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 787. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
