The National Monuments Service's description
Doon Point headland is cut off at the neck by a straight bank of stone 78m long, c4.5m in width and between 1.5m to 1.8m in height. Westropp (1909) mentions a fosse '21 feet wide and 6 feet deep at the centre ... getting deeper to each end'; however, this feature is not evident today. Doon Castle (995) is also entranched by a straight mound c235m long, c4.5m wide and c1m high, which runs in a WNW-ENE direction until it joins the bank cutting the headland. At a distance of 240m from the bank cutting the neck of the promontory is another straight bank running roughly NNE-SSW and measuring 120m in length. Finally on the S side of the headland a final straight bank whose line points at the centre of the Crescent Fort (105) runs for 235m before also joining the bank which cuts the headland.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 104. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
