The National Monuments Service's description
This square-shaped enclosure in Leslie's Wood is adjacent to St Patrick's Terrace and is known as 'Stranavaun' (Sruthán an Mhúin, streamlet of the urine; originally the name of a streamlet, now closed up, according to a local informant). The site is square in plan, measuring internally 64m N-S and E-W. This area is enclosed by two well-defined earthen banks with a wide steep fosse. The outer bank measures 1.5m high externally, c 2m above the fosse and c 9m wide; the fosse measures 3m wide. The external height of the inner bank above the fosse measures c 3m, the internal height of the bank above the interior .5m, and the width of the bank c 8m.
The entrance would appear to be on the S side. It measures 4m wide at its inner bank and 6m at the outer bank. A slight causeway can be seen over the fosse, measuring 6m in width. According to Kerrigan (1980) the principal period of construction or occupation of this type of enclosure was between 1641-59.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 979. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
