The National Monuments Service's description

Litter Castle (site of). The only reference we have with regard to Litter Castle is from John F. O'Sullivan, who states: 'The north western sector was held by the O'Connors and Fitzmaurice. The main defences of their territory were a number of fortified castles located along the sea coast and the mouth of the river Shannon which included... Litter. '

The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 991. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
