The National Monuments Service's description

In 1995, archaeological trial trenching (O’Donovan 1996. Excavation Licence No. 95E0265) in advance of a proposed Local Authority development revealed a segment of a substantial ditch and some 36 medieval pits (KD040-002044-). The ditch (Wth 2m; min. D 2m) ran N-S (traced L c. 25m) parallel to Main St. and produced pottery dating to the 13th or 14th-century. The presence of silt implies that it once carried water and suggests that it may have functioned as a defensive feature.
