The National Monuments Service's description

According to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 3, 205-6), the tholsel is first referred to in 1674 (PRONI D 30378/2/3/5), and was located in Bride Street and not on site of its 18th century successor which is on the Market Square. This may indicate that the medieval market place was located in the Bride Street area (the lower part of which is shown as wider than as present on Rocque’s 1757 map) and that today’s triangular-shaped market place dates to the 17th or 18th centuries. No visible surface traces survive.
