Religious house - Augustinian friars

The National Monuments Service's description

Although marked 'Augustinian Abbey (Site of)' just NW of the motte (KD019-030009-) on the latest ed. (1938-9) of the OS 6-inch map, according to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 4, 366-7), this is incorrect and the monument near the motte, 'is almost certainly the site of the Dominican friary' (KD019-030012-). An Augustinian friary was founded in the late-14th century (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 301), but nothing is known of its dedication or history. An extent of 1540 (White 1943, 165) mentions that some of the buildings were still standing. The friary was then occupied by John Sutton. It was leased to Thoam Appower in 1567, and to Nicholas Alymer in 1584 (Bradey et al. 1986, vol. 4, 367). Although its precise location is unknown it has been suggested (ibid.) that it 'may have been in the vicinity of Friary river, whose name suggests that there was a religious house here.'
