According to Bradley et al. (1986, Vol. 2, 126), the earliest reference to milling occurs in Thomas de Hereford's 1213-1224 granting of the tithes of a mill in the 'vill of Kildroch' to St. Thomas' Abbey, Dublin. The manor mill of Celbridge, forfeited by David Sutton in 1580, was leased to John Cusake in 1583 and granted, along with the manor, to Edward Fitzgerald in in 1588, and thereafter to John Dongan. Inquisitions taken in 1611 and 1627 note that Walter Dongan held two water mills: one, with its mill-pool, mill-race and an enclosure known as the 'mill parke' was located near the castle at Castletown (KD011-023----); the other was a waste toft (i.e. a holding comprising a dwelling plus outbuildings and land) on the site of a watermill in Kildrought. In 1654, the Civil Survey noted that Lady Dongan held a corn mill and a cloth mill, valued at £20 p.a., in Kildrought, while there was also another mill out of repair there. The precise locations of these mills are unknown.
