The National Monuments Service's description
According to Lord Walter Fitzgerald (1903-5, 3-24) a castle existed at Carton before the present house (KD006-009----) was built, but it was located near the churchyard (KD006-007002-) in Old Carton Td to the N. The castle of 'Carthyn' is referred to in 1355 and the manor is referred to on various occasions subsequently. It was leased to the Talbot family in 1603 and described as containing a castle and mill but was in ruins by 1654. In the 'Book of Forfeited Estates' (William III, 1694-1702)), it was described as a 'stone-walled square castle on that part of the townland called Old Carton'. It's precise location is unknown.
