The National Monuments Service's description
An early church foundation traditionally associated with St. Ninian and mentioned in a number of early historical references: in 869 the death of Colga, abbot and anchorite of 'Cluain Conaire' (Cloncurry) is recorded and the church was raided by the Anglo-Normans in 1171, suggesting that the monastery remained a functioning centre into the late 12th c. A borough was subsequently established here, probably several decades later (Bradley et al. 1986 vol. 2, 155-67) There is no obvious visible surface trace of the early church and monastery, but it was probably in the vicinity of the later church of SS Mary and Martin (KD004-021005-).
