The National Monuments Service's description

On the summit of a low terraced limestone hillock overlooking the beach. Dún Formna, as it is known locally, is a much-restored Nat. Mon. consisting of a roughly oval cashel (N-S 52m; E-W 41m) defined by a massive drystone wall which follows the line of the limestone scarp. Entrance at NE. A small projecting rectangular turret, much restored, at SW is probably associated with the medieval castle (GA120-017002-) which stands in the interior. The interior formerly contained a number of possible clochans (GA120-017003-) (Anon. 1887, 45), no traces of which survive today. (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 3, 265; Mason 1938, 199-200; Westropp 1895, 272)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
