The National Monuments Service's description

An inspection report, dated 12 December 1974, records that the monument then consisted of a very large enclosure bounded by remains of a stone rampart which had stone slabs set vertically to form the inner and outer facings with the space between filled by a rubble core. A modern townland boundary (stone wall) had been built along the top of the rampart from WSW – SW – S – SSE. The interior was subdivided by a complex of grass-covered banks of stone which probably were collapsed walls. The remains of a possible ‘house’ structure were recorded beside a gap in the rampart at the NNW. It was unclear if this was an entrance feature or the result of stones having been robbed from the rampart to build the structure. A modern wall extended roughly E-W outside the rampart at the N. To the N of this was an extensive complex of grass and stone banks, probably collapsed walls, representing a field system (GA095-177001-) connected with the enclosure. Two roughly parallel banks were interpreted as possibly forming part of a roadway or avenue. Remains of the field system were also visible to the S of the enclosure part of which had been cut away in the course of constructing the railway (SMR file).

This monument was listed under section 8(1) of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1954 and published in Iris Oifigiúil on April 30, 1976, where it is named as ‘Monastic Site and Old Field System.’
