The National Monuments Service's description

On Oileán Ealtanach, now Nuns Island, close to W bank of the River Corrib and to NW of Galway town (GA094-100----). Founded in 1649 by Franciscan Nuns or Convent of Poor Clares on a site granted by the Corporation. Abandoned in 1653 but briefly reoccupied in 1660s. By c. 1691 the nuns occupied a house in Market St. within the town. No visible trace remains; the present convent on Nuns Island dates from 1825. (Concannon 1929, 40-80; Hardiman 1820, 274-6)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
