The National Monuments Service's description
This is the approximate location of a dovecote represented on the mid-17th century Pictorial Map of Galway and referred to in the index as 'Collumbarium antiquum in australi parte urbis', the old dovecote in the southern part of the city (Pictorial Map, Elenchus). This is only known reference to this structure and it is not represented on any other map.

Pictorial map of mid-seventeenth century Galway printed during the reign of Charles II (1660-86). Two copies of this map are known to exist. One is in the Hardiman Library, NUI Galway, and the other is in the library of Trinity College, Dublin (MS 1209.73).
