The National Monuments Service's description
On a small island in Ross Lake. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Jonick Ohalorane' (Nolan 1901, 115). The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 3, 83) record that 'a small portion of its ruins are still shewn [sic]' and Killanin (1947, 123) mentions 'the remains of the foundations' but these appear to be of an 18th-19th-C single-storey building. No visible surface trace survives.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
