The National Monuments Service's description

In existence in 1574 when 'Beallabeanchere' was in the possession of 'Thomas Ballagh' (Nolan 1901b, 118), According to Nolan (1901a, 40-1), it was situated 'half a mile north of Corofin close to Ballibanagher House and just above the old flood line of the Grange and Clare rivers which meet near the ancient site'. Ballybanagher House is marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map, but no visible surface trace of the castle was noted in its vicinity. (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 131-2)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
