The National Monuments Service's description
In E half of Lough Hackett. A small tree-covered oval island (E-W c. 50m, N-S c. 35m) composed of small stones. Hardiman (1846, 366), quoting from the Annals of the Four Masters for the year AD 990, notes that 'A great wind swallowed the Island of Lough Kime suddenly in one hour, with its habitation and circular wall, which was thirty feet [9.1]'. Animal bones have been recovered from the site (Waddell 1977, 59). On NW and SE sides of the island are two 18th- or early 19th-C summerhouses, probably associated with nearby Lisdonagh House. (Knox 1901b, 365-70)
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
