The National Monuments Service's description
On a slight rise in undulating grassland: it stands in SW part of a large rectangular graveyard. According to OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 229), no 'ruins of the parochial church, if there was ever a very old one primarily ... are ... at present observable'. However, they note the presence of a 'Protestant church, some time ago deserted, ... [which] threatens ruin'. This is undoubtedly the structure marked on 1st and later eds. of OS 6-inch map as being 'in Ruins'. According to Melvin (c. 1971, 11), this church 'was erected in 1784' and is described in 1837 as 'about to be re-built'. The visible remains comprise a ruinous rectangular church (E-W; L 13.8m, Wth 7.7m ext.) of which N and S side-walls and E gable still stand. The main architectural features consist of large pointed arch windows, two in each of the side-walls and one centrally placed in E gable. Roads (GA031-044002-) are associated. (CUCAP AYQ 70)
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
