The National Monuments Service's description
Close to centre of Ballynakill Lough. Cartron Island, as it is marked on the OS 6-inch maps, is a small subcircular overgrown island (E-W 20m; N-S 18.5m) defined by a stone platform. The interior rises slightly to form a flat mound with traces of a drystone revetment at N. The remains of two huts (GA022-013001-, GA022-013002-) occupy the interior.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
