The National Monuments Service's description
In pastureland on S-facing slope of W extremity of Slieve Dart. The 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1930) shows a cluster of circular and rectilinear structures which it labels as 'Clacan': a possible house cluster. The map also individually names two of these structures as follows: (a) at W edge of the possible house cluster, a small (?)square structure on W face/bank of a boundary or stream is labelled 'Sweating Kiln'; (b) at E edge of the cluster, 170m to E of the above, a small open circle at the head of a stream is labelled. 'Sweating Kilns (in Ruins)'. Due to land clearance in the area, no visible surface trace of any of these features survives. The 'kilns' may be the same as those noted by Neary (1914, 126) 'on N side of the mountain road at Quinultagh' but shown on his location map c. 2.2km to WNW of the above: not located by the survey.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
