The National Monuments Service's description
Possible burnt mound (AA3) in Trench 1 located in E quadrant of development site at Shanganagh Park, Shankill, Dublin 8. Archaeological testing was carried out over the course of 5 days from 18 September 2023 using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat grading bucket. The trenches targeted a series of geophysical anomalies and open green space to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. Testing revealed five areas of archaeological significance, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas 1-5. The report was undertaken by Paul Duffy of IAC Archaeology under Licence No. 23E0758. AA3 comprises a probable trough (C4) associated with possible burnt mound activity in the southeast of the proposed development area. No sign of the mound material survives. The probable trough (C4) that is likely to have been associated with burnt mound activity in the southeast of the proposed development area would be typical of Bronze Age activity. Two fulachta fiadh are known to have been excavated c. 500m to the west of this trough illustrating that this activity was taking place in the immediate area (DU026-116----). It is recommended that the probable small trough (AA3) and the features in the northern limit of AA2 be subject to preservation by record (archaeological excavation) prior to the construction phase of the project.
