The National Monuments Service's description
In the 17th century a castle and six other dwellings stood upon the lands of Terenure occupied by Terenure College. They were in the possession of the Barnewall family (Simington 1945, 290). At the end of the 17th century Major Deane of Crumlin built a mansion on the site. It was his residence until 1699 (Mac Giolla-Phadraig 1954, 8, 10, 11). In 1787 Terenure House was re-built (op. cit. 12-13). No early features in the present building were identified.
