The National Monuments Service's description
The Civil Survey (1654-56) records; ‘There is upon ye premisses [of the Lord Baron of Hoath] One faire stone house slated (DU019-011001-) wth. severall houses of Office (DU019-011003-) and a stone Bawne (DU019-011002-) valued by ye Jury at three hundred pounds.’ (Simington 1945, 173).
According to Bowen (1963, 74) this house, known as 'Quillestra', had been the property of the St. Lawrence family of Howth since the late 14th century; Nicholas St. Lawrence had entertained Sir James Butler at Killester c. 1492. The ‘faire stone house’ may have been on or close to the site of ‘Killester House’, which stood close to Killester Village and was a single storey, 18th century house, demolished early in the 20th-century (Bence-Jones 1988, 170). The precise location of the house, buildings and bawn is unknown and the general area is now occupied by extensive residential housing estates.
