Creighton Street Barracks

 

A 19th-century barracks on Creighton Street now Hanover Lane  was recorded in 2025 in the ‘Our Shared Built Military Heritage: The online mapping, inventorying and recording of the Army Barracks of Ireland, 1690-1921' a project that was funded by the North South Research Programme 2022-2024 and co-led by University College Dublin and The Open University' (Forbes and McGrath 2025).  The barracks was described in the inventory of the ‘Army Barracks of Ireland - Our Shared Military Heritage, 1690-1921’ as follows; ‘The Dublin Recruiting Depot was on the north side of Townsend Street and ran up along the left-hand side of Hanover Lane (Creigton Street) to the quays. The building was a leasehold. The depot was in use as a barracks from 1811 to possibly 1832. The building was condemned as unfit in 1826 and eventually demolished in 1843. In 1812-13 it was reported to have capacity for two infantry officers and 230 men, while in 1822 it was occupied by three officers and 430 men'.
