Graveslab

The National Monuments Service's description

17th-century graveslab of Dublin City and County Sheriff John Linneger (died 30th of October 1677) and his wife Martha (d. 1684) located in the disused graveyard (DU018-494----) formerly known as the ‘Green Churchyard’ or the ‘Vicar’s Bawn' located to the E and SE of St Patrick’s Cathedral (DU018-020269-) which was closed for burials in 1868.  Inscription on the graveslab transcribed by Mrs. T. Long in 1905 as follows; ‘At the top of the Linnegar family slab is a large coat-of arms cut in relief on a shield. The shield contains two coats, the Linnegar (?) arms, consisting of a double-headed eagle between three shells ; and another coat which appears to be three gates, two and one. The inscription, which is in incised lettering, is very hard to read, but is preserved among the Cathedral records : — 

Here lyeth the Body of Iohn Linneger
Esquire, who was sheriff of the City of
Dublin anno 1660, and sheriff of the
County of Dublin anno 1676. He deceased
October the 80 1677.
Here also lyeth the Body of Martha
Linneger wife of the said Iohn
Linneger Esqr
who deceased the 21 of No
vember 1684. Here lies the Body of Mary
Ferguson daughter to Captain James Duhart
And great grand daughter to the above . . .
who died April 27 1768 Aged 26 year. ' (Anon. 1906, 299-300).
