Salute Battery in the Phoenix Park is depicted at this location on Taylor's 1816 Map of County Dublin, the battery is partially hachured on the 1837 ed. OSi 6-inch map which shows the earthwork immediately to the E of the Wellington Monument, which was partially built on the site of the battery. Fortification described in 1818 as; 'The Salute Battery, situated on the highest ground in the Park. It mounts twelve pieces of cannon, twelve pounders, which are fired on rejoicing days; but as such are not likely to occur as often as formerly, its
site has been given by the Board of Ordnance to the Wellington Committee, for the erection of the Grand Trophy [Wellington Monument]' (Warburton et. al. 1818, 1309)
