Ogham stone (present location)

This is the present location for the ogham stone from Killorglin, Co. Kerry (KE056-046----). It was discovered in 1877 in a 'rath cave' near Killorglin (Rhys 1902, 15). It was provenanced by Macalister to 'near Lough Carragh' (1902, 87). It is 1.2m high and measures 0.45m x 0.42m in basal dimensions. Macalister (1945, 248, no. 253) read its inscription as: GALEOTOS. Macalister also noted three vowel notches near the top of the stone which, he suggested, represent the end of an earlier inscription. It seems equally possible, however, that they are a continuation of this inscription (pers. comm. Fionnbarr Moore). (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, no. 916)
