The National Monuments Service's description
Archaeological excavations in 1990 exposed a timber revetment of early Thirteenth century date. This was a front- braced revetment, which would have narrowed the water channel to a width of 2.8m. There is also evidence for a stone revetting wall of later Fourteenth century date (Walsh , C 1997, 60-69).
