The National Monuments Service's description
The present bridge, built in 1863, occupies the site of an wooden bridge called 'Bloody Bridge' which was built in 1670. It was rebuilt in 1704 (Dillon Cosgrave 1909, 4-5; Mac Lysaght, 1982, 76).
