The National Monuments Service's description

The precise location of 'New Street Gate' at the S end of New Street has not been identified (Bradley and King 1987, 3, 196, No. 162). This gateway site was shown as Gate E8 on the Irish Historic Towns Atlas map of Medieval Dublin c. 840–c. 1540 (Clarke 1978; Clarke 2002, 21; McNeill 1950, 171-2). Listed as 'the Newstreet gate' in Stanihurst's Description of Dublin, 1577 (CARD 11, 547). The vicars of St Patrick's Cathedral were in possession of several tenements in New-Street, a 60 year lease dating from 1662 between the vicars and William Williams described his property as; 'a parcel of land lying at the south end of New-Street, called Baugon's park, counted in length, from east to west, one hundred and sixteen yards, and in breadth, from north to south, one hundred yards, whereof thirty yards of the said breadth lyeth within New-street-gate, and the other seventy without the gate; mearing in the north to the Vicar's land; in the south to the Archbishop of Dublin's land belonging to St. Patrick's church, and west to the street' (Mason 1820, 99).
