The National Monuments Service's description

The De Vesci Papers in the National Library of Ireland contains a map of Lucan village dating from 1699 which shows the location of a medieval castle in the village of Lucan (NLI MS 39,251/3). On this map a possible watermill is depicted standing immediately to the E of the Griffeen River and to the S of St. Mary's Church (DU017-019002-) and Lucan House (DU017-019008-). The watermill was located in a parcel of land adjoining on the W bank of the River and fronting onto the medieval road leading to Cooldrinagh. This watermill was listed in the 1680 survey of the lands of Lucan, where it is recorded that on parcel no. 22 the land of 'Nicholas Roos' who held 'on the north side of ye River An Island by ye Mill' (NLI MS 39/256/1).

NLI MS 39,251/3 Original and copy title deeds to the lands of Pettycannon, outside Lucan, so called because originally they belonged to the Petty Canons and Choristers of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.
