The National Monuments Service's description

De Courcy describes a lighthouse on Howth Head in 1685 which had been built by Sir Robert Reading in 1665 (De Courcy 1996, 17-18). It is thought to have replaced a beacon. This was noted by Scalé and Richards in 1765. The base of this lighthouse is buried in a garden behind the old Bailey cottage (pers. comm. Paddy Healy). The exact location of this monument is unknown.
