The National Monuments Service's description

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007

Castle in vicinity of Ballyellin Church recorded on Down Survey (1655-6) map. May have stood immediately S of churchyard, where ground is level and sheltered although ill-drained. Low earthworks not marked on the 'OS 6-inch' maps are visible, apparently of field system predating present pre-1839 system (earthworks (CW019-081----)). Castle unlikely to have stood immediately N of graveyard where ringfort exists (no. 358). The exact location of the castle is unknown.
