According to the OS Letters (1839, 16) 'Castlefield is a local name for a field in Ballybar Lower townland, which got the name from a castle that formerly stood in it. Most of the people in the neighbourhood know the spot where it occurred'. The precise location of this castle is unknown within the townland.
