The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Mentioned in 1589 as one of eight principal castles of Carlow (JKAS 1932, 80). Marked 'an old castle' on Down Survey (1655-6) map. On site or in immediate vicinity of Rathmore House or possibly identifiable with remnant of tumulus (CW003-020----) of NW of church site (CW003-021----). The precise location of the castle within the townland is unknown.
