In Drumkerry Lough. Wood-Martin (1886, 200-1) recorded how the lowering of the water-levels in the lake in 1863 had converted an oval-shaped island (dims. c. 40m N-S; c. 25m E-W), situated close to the SE shore of the lake, into a peninsula. The island was enclosed by a stockade of birch and oak piles. A layer of gravelly clay and large stones added height to the summit. At N burnt bones and charcoal, which Wood-Martin interpreted as a kitchen midden, were discovered. The entrance to the crannóg was apparently at S with a landing-place identified at NE. He also noted a dugout canoe shaped from an oak trunk embedded in the bottom of the lake, close to a second landing-place.
