The National Monuments Service's description

Davies (1948, 99) claimed that the earliest reference to a church here dated from 885AD and that until 1454 it was no more than a parish church. In that year it became an episcopal seat perhaps translated from Slandore.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
