The National Monuments Service's description

Captain Alexander Saunderson reputedly built a house of lime and stone and a bawn accompanied by two flankers, at this site. It was destroyed during the Williamite wars. The present 'Castle Saunderson' is a composite structure dating to the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. (Hill 1872,54-9; Saunderson 1936, 11-12).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
