The National Monuments Service's description

On high rock outcrop with commanding view in every direction. Shown on OS 6-inch map (1842) as rectangular structure. Castle now levelled, leaving subrectangular grass-covered mound (H 1.3m; 3.2m N-S; 6.8m E-W) of rubble; some stone-faced earthen terracing to S. Mentioned by Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 650) 'of Ardagh Castle...a small fragment only exists. O Driscoll castle (O Murchadha 1985, 178).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
