The National Monuments Service's description
Bruno O'Donoghue: 'Bishop Dive Downes stated in 1700 that there were ruins of a chapel at the west end of the town on which the Protestant Church appears to have been built. This old chapel was dedicated to Saint Molaga.' (O'Donoghue 1986, 4). This possible church is referred to in the 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork - vol. 1 West Cork' (1992, 336) under the entry (no. 3124) for the present church (CO147-058002-). This church is referred to in the entry as follows: 'Brady (1863, vol. 1, 172) refers to a church (CO147-058003-) in ruins here in 1699.'
