The National Monuments Service's description

Within cliff-edge fort (CO139-014001) on N side of Dunmanus harbour; Dunmanus castle (CO139-015---) on S side. Shown on OS 6-inch map (1842) as rectangular structure 'in ruins'. Low grass-covered square area (6.3m NE-SW; 4.4m NW-SE) on inner bank of fort at cliff edge. Westropp (1915, 281) describes this as 'a turret'. O'Mahoney castle (Healy 1988, 201).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
