The National Monuments Service's description
This possible promontory fort, on the W side of Bear Island, is named 'Doonigar' on the 1901 OS 6-inch map. According to O'Sullivan (1992, 46), it contains the remains of a wall on the W and NW sides and has two sea arches under it. It was described by Westropp (1921, 11-12) as '...a platform of rock of a very irregular plan…inaccessible from the land side, but can be reached from a boat.' He noted that there is 'apparently no trace of fencing or of human occupation save the name.' (ibid.). Westropp added that the platform 'was perhaps sufficiently well defended by the chasm 70ft. [21m] or 80 ft. [24m] deep, and probably rock falls obliterated slight works along the edge.' (ibid.).
