The National Monuments Service's description
On partially peat-covered bedrock, in a rough mountain pasture area, on the S summit of Hungry Hill. The remains of a circular cairn (diam. c. 8m) are indicated by a variety of stones which protrude (H 0.1m) NW-S from the shallow peat. Elsewhere the bedrock is exposed. A more recent cylinder-shaped cairn (diam. 4m; H 2m) occupies the SW half of the original cairn. This more recent cairn is known as 'Lord Bantry's Pile' and was erected in the 18th-19th century as a navigation aid for sailing ships entering Bantry Bay. It is likely that stones from the older cairn were reused to build the substantial modern cairn.
