Architectural fragment

This fragment is on display on the ground floor of the Kinsale Museum, which is situated in the old Market House (CO112-034007-). It consists of a single carved block, the upper portion of a two-light ogee-headed window (L 0.80m; H 0.28m; T 0.22m). Each light is 0.19m wide and there is no evidence for glazing bars. The central spandrel bears the coat-of-arms of the Roche family flanked on either side by a stem terminating in a single leaf. The corner spandrels are each decorated with a Tudor rose. All carving is in false relief and is typical of work dating to the 15th/16th centuries. The piece was formerly incorporated in Roche's bond house, Kinsale, and was transferred to the museum when that building was demolished (pers. comm. E. Gillan). The original provenance of the fragment is unknown but it undoubtedly came from one of the merchant houses in Kinsale.
