The National Monuments Service's description

There is reference to 'a castle' in Gortigrenane from an account of the lands of Thomas Daunt, second son of the Thomas who purchased Gortigrenane in 1595 (pers. comm. D. Ó Murchadha). Though Healy (1988, 263) refers to 'the original castle of the De Cogans and Fitzgeralds' there is no historic evidence for this, nor was the field between Gortigrenene House (CO099-050----) and the estuary called 'The Castle Field' but is known as 'The Foundation Field' (pers. comm. D. Ó Murchadha).

The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).
