The National Monuments Service's description
A small castle is shown on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map in the vicinity of the present Ballinluig House (CO098-065----). This is a 3-bay, 2-storey gable-ended house of late 18th/early 19th-century appearance. An inscribed stone was set into the wall of the house c. 1970; this formerly had been in the garden wall. The inscription on the stone reads 'John Roche Fitzmaurice and Clara his wife built this house in the year 1687'. This house probably replaced the house shown on the Down Survey (1655-6) map and was subsequently replaced/rebuilt when the present house constructed.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).
