The National Monuments Service's description
Smith (1750, vol. 1, 147) records 'remains of an ancient building, called the Spittle, supposed to have been a leper-hospital'; he describes this as 'not far from the water side ... near this, is the village of Ballinachora'. This suggests a location around the Castleredmond area but precise location not know. There appears to be nothing else known of this site (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 354; Lee 1966, 20).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
