The National Monuments Service's description
On narrow low-lying spit projecting from NW corner of Great Island, known as Monning Tower. Circular tower (diam. 15.5m), with flattened profile to E and W, built of coursed limestone ashlar. Entered on S side by 1st floor door with rounded arch; spiral stone staircase on E side of doorway gives access to ground floor and roof; steps now broken above 1st floor level and access to roof not gained. Inner face of tower and dome over 1st floor of brick. Ground floor divided into four radially arranged chambers around central circular area. Chamber to N had brick vault, now fallen, and served as magazine. Wooden floor over now gone; 1st floor windows in E and W walls; widely splayed with round headed arches; both flanked by a fireplace. Known as 'Monning Tower; successfully attacked by a band of Fenians in 1867 (Coleman 1907b, 199-200). One of three Martello Towers guarding N side of Great Island (CO075-029---; CO075-041---).
