The National Monuments Service's description

In N suburbs of Cork City. House described by Bence-Jones (1978, 28) as a 'handsome, 3 storey gable ended early Georgian house, fronted by a forecourt with imposing gate piers'. Gate piers described in 1840s (Coleman 1909, 43) as dated 1641. Cromwell is supposed to have excused the proable builder, Stephen Coppinger, from forfeit and to have spent Christmas 1649 there. Described in 1908 as 'of fresh and modern appearance in front' but with walls of 'great thickness....and....three very curious gables' forming rear of house' (ibid., 44 and facing page); earlier description mentions 'small, narrow windows'. Front part of house taken down c. 1800; demolished c. 1970s.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
