In grounds of Garrane House, with commanding view to S over Blackwater River valley. Depicted as hachured oval enclosure (c. 45m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; arc N->SE survives in field boundary (part of townland boundary) on 1904 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps, with Garrane House built on W half. Arc survives to E, formed by earthen bank (int. H 1.8m; ext. H 0.5m). May be single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 31yd) recorded by Bowman (1934, 334) on Thomas Carver's land, as 'practically levelled'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
